Introduction To WAGGGS World Centres

WHAT ARE THE WAGGGS WORLD CENTRES?

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) World Centres offer unique residential training and conference facilities owned by WAGGGS. They are located in five different countries — Our Chalet in Switzerland, Nuestra Cabaña in Mexico, Pax Lodge in the UK, Sangam in India, and Kusafiri in Ghana. They serve as international hubs for leadership and training programmes, conferences, and camps for members of the Global Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting Movement. Each centre features its own distinctive characteristics and offers a variety of programmes designed to empower girls and young women, foster international understanding, and promote the values of the Movement. The World Centres empower girls and young women to make a positive impact in the world. They provide a unique environment where members from all over the world can come together to learn, grow, and build lifelong friendships.

THE 5 WORLD CENTRES

HISTORY & AIM

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) established five World Centres to promote international friendship, personal development, and cultural exchange. Since 1932, these Centres have hosted over 200,000 Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, providing safe and empowering spaces.

World Centres aim to inspire young women to become leaders and collaborators and equip them with the knowledge and skills to shape a promising future. Through various activities, workshops, and discussions, participants may pursue their potential in full.  Much like an ultimate Girl Guide/Girl Scout sleepaway camp with a touch of international diplomacy and world-saving ambition, the World Centres empower girls and young women to become the best versions of themselves.
Are you for the adventure of a lifetime? Explore the fascinating World Centres in the following section!

Our Chalet, Switzerland

In 1932, Our Chalet became the first WAGGGS World Centre, founded with the generous donation of US Girl Scout leader Helen Storrow. Nestled in the Swiss Alps in Switzerland, Our Chalet is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking and skiing to simply soaking in breathtaking mountain views, it is an adventurer's paradise.

Nuestra Cabaña, Mexico
Established in 1957 in Cuernavaca, the "City of Eternal Spring", Nuestra Cabaña is the largest WAGGGS World Centre which takes up 20,000 square metres. As the sole World Centre in the Western Hemisphere, it radiates warmth through its climate and hospitality that represent the local culture. Immerse yourself in the rich Mexican culture, savour some delicious cuisines, and engage yourself in community service projects. You may also gain the experience of the vibrant and meaningful Festival of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), where you may embrace the Mexican traditions through joining in unique celebrations to honour their ancestors.

Sangam, India
Sangam, meaning "Coming Together" in Sanskrit, was founded in 1966 in the vibrant city of Pune in India. As the only WAGGGS World Centre in the Asia Pacific Region, Sangam offers a deep dive into Indian culture, allowing participants to join community projects and environmental stewardship, learn about Indian culture traditions, and make lifelong friends from around the globe.

Pax Lodge, United Kingdom
Pax Lodge was officially opened on 15 March 1991 in the United Kingdom, adjacent to the World Bureau of WAGGGS. The word "Pax" means "Peace" in Latin. Pax Lodge was preceded by two World Centres in London, including Our Ark (1939–1959) and Olave House (1959–1988).

Located in the heart of London, Pax Lodge offers a mix of history, culture, and iconic sightseeing, perfect for those who want to explore a vibrant city while connecting with fellow Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from around the world.

Kusafiri, Ghana
The most recent addition, Kusafiri, started in 2011 as an experimental project to bring the World Centre experience to the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in the Africa Region, and its establishment was officially approved three years later. 15 July 2011 is celebrated as the official "birthday" of Kusafiri. In October 2015, it was officially named Kusafiri, which means "to journey" in the Swahili language.
It brings programmes and opportunities for cultural exchange, leadership development, and community service across various locations in Africa.
For the first decade, Kusafiri was a mobile World Centre that moved to different African countries according to the needs of the events and activities. The purpose is to utilise existing facilities to bring international experiences to local Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in Africa. During the 38th World Conference held in Cyprus in 2023, a motion was carried to have Kusafiri stationed in Ghana from 2024 until 2026 as a trial to be reviewed at the next World Conference, where a decision will be made on whether to permanently station Kusafiri in Ghana.
