Eyes On Us, Hearts United
Community Impact Programme - "EnABLE" draws inspiration from the Hong Kong Girl Guides Association delegates who had participated in the "Youths for Inclusion Starts with You and I" Young Women Event hosted by Girl Guides Singapore. The delegation learned about the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals and other people with disabilities in society, including a lack of accessibility, social prejudices and misunderstandings, and limited employment opportunities. These experiences revealed the inadequate attention and awareness our society has towards people with disabilities, prompting us to reflect on how to promote inclusion through education and action.
Recognising this, the delegation designed the booklet, "Eyes On Us, Hearts Unites", which aims at dispelling misconceptions about the visually impaired, enhancing understanding towards their life challenges, and encouraging Girl Guides to support the visually impaired with empathy and action, promoting social inclusivity to ensure equal opportunities and respect for all individuals with disabilities.
"Social Inclusion Challenge" Concept
To encourage Girl Guides to actively participate and complete the tasks in the booklet, we have set up the "Social Inclusion Challenge". This not only acknowledges the efforts and dedication of the participants for completing the booklet, but also encourages and recognises their dissemination efforts on the concept of social inclusion. We hope that every participant who completes the "Social Inclusion Challenge" can become an ambassador to promote social inclusion, and spread care and understanding to their community.
Content
The activities are presented in a booklet, divided into two core parts that combine education, experience, and reflection to guide participants in understanding the world of the visually impaired, inspiring social participation.
-
Part One: Understanding the challenges and needs of the visually impaired
-
Part Two: Critical thinking and social participation
Through this booklet, we aim to deepen the understanding of the needs of the visually impaired among participants and the public, break down prejudices and barriers, and work together to build a society that respects diversity, equality, and inclusivity.
