Activity: Maintain a Healthy Body

40 minutes

Learning Goal

The activity aims at enhancing the physical strength of members, training their muscle flexibility such as waist, abdomen, ankle etc through a series of stretching exercises. Members would be able to remain healthy and reduce the risk of injury during exercises. The activity also hope to increase their interest in sports and develop a hobby of doing exercises.  


Prepare some instruction cards (see examples below).


Examples of instruction cards:

Walk around the activity venue with the head holding a book

Stand with one leg and hold 30 seconds

Do frog jumps

Do sit-up 5 times

Do rabbit jumps

Shuttle Run for 30 seconds

Do three type of rope skipping

Throw and catch the ball 5 times

Bounce the ball 10 times

Skipping rope for thirty seconds

Bend down and touch the toes for 10 times


Ask members to draw a card and complete the action as indicated in the instruction card.


The team using the shortest time will win.

Which elements of the method are used, and how?

☑ Learning in small groups – In this kind of competitive game, members have to cooperate with each other and act as fast as they can so as to win the game.


☑ My path, my pace – Encourage members to develop the habit of regular exercising. They can develop in the sports they are good at or interested in for their own entertainment.  


☑ Learning by doing – Members can learn a variety of simple but effective activities which can train their physical skills and muscles. They can practice in spare time to maintain a healthy body.


☑Connecting with others – There are many types of sports activities. Some may need the cooperation of two people, and some may need more members to form a team. They can learn the team spirit then.


☑Connecting with my world – Sports can be developed into worldwide scale. Members can know more about international sports events like the Olympic Games.

How does the method give youth members a chance to take the lead?

Doing exercises is actually a good method to train members into a perseverant person. It is necessary to be patient to achieve initial success. When members face any difficulties, they will be brave to take up the challenges.

How can you connect this activity to the values of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting?

Members understand that they need to bear the sole responsibility for their own health. They can start a healthy life style by developing the habit of exercising. They learn to cooperate and help each other during the activity. They also take care of the health of others.
