Time needed

30-45 minutes

Learning Goal

To train members the observation ability in life and to develop a careful mind of observing the characteristics of tiny things.

Instructions

Place some small objects (such as buttons, pin, ribbons etc.) in 12 different locations near brushes. See if members can find them out one by one. Do not hide the objects in a too secret place at first. Leader can make use of leaves, flowers and seeds as the searching goal.

Before the game, the leader can give some hints to members, like:

◇    The object is as red as blood

◇    The object is dark like coal

◇    The object is as white as snow

◇    The object is as bright as jewelry

◇    The object is as round as moon

◇    The object is within the size of….

Which elements of the method are used, and how?

☑ Learning in small groups – Members work in a team to look for the target objects.

☑ Learning by doing – Members learn to observe the characteristics of things in details, such as shapes, colors, functions etc. They also find out the similarities and differences of objects.

☑Connecting with my world – Members go to the community and go outdoors to observe the environment and the surrounding societies.

How does the method give youth members a chance to take the lead?

Each team selects a representative with leadership ability. She will lead the team to search for the target items. She also plans and discusses the division of labor with the whole team.

How can you connect this activity to the values of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting?

Members share how they find the targets. Through team coordination, members distribute the works to the suitable people. Members learn mutual respect and assistance.
