Learning Goal

Members know more about different public transports in Hong Kong, such as the distribution, price and instructions they need to pay attention to. Members learn to choose the appropriate transport when going out, and they learn to follow the rules when using them.

Instructions

Design an outdoor activity and ask members to travel with different vehicles. Members can also invite their parents to travel with them. Make a record and report what they find during the journey, such as the travelling date, time, the starting location and destination, ticket price etc.

 

Leaders can divide members into a few small groups and ask them to go to different places. Please ensure there is a leader or adult to go with members.

 

Please explain safety instructions to members before the activity.

 

Reference of public transport in Hong Kong:

Hong Kong's territory is only 1105 square kilometers. 17% of the territory is high-density building area. But the population has exceeded 7 millions.

Public transports in Hong Kong include mass transit railways, trams, buses, minibuses, taxis and ferries. The carrying capacity is more than 11 million passengers per day.

Which elements of the method are used, and how?

☑ Learning in small groups – Members cooperate to make a detailed record of observation.  

 

☑ Learning by doing – Members have to think of the fastest and the most convenient way to reach the destination. They need to consider the ticket price as well. During travelling, members practice to buy tickets and use the ticket machine; they learn and follow the rules in different transport too.

 

☑Connecting with others – Members will travel with their parents. They can also contact with people of different background in the society and know more their lives, like drivers, passengers, service staff in costumer centre etc.

How does the method give youth members a chance to take the lead?

Members need to decide and plan the route and details of the trip. They give comments on the itinerary. They also share the interesting experience while traveling.  

How can you connect this activity to the values of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting?

Through sharing experience and choosing vehicles, members learn to offer helps and appreciate each other. They also have more understanding on their community.
