Learning Goal

Members identify the characteristics of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other regions. They learn how the culture and social environment of a place influence the process of localization as well as the local culture of Girl Guides. Members understand that even if there are different names, uniforms, age division and forms of activity for Brownies in different regions of the world, the core values and the vision of Guiding Movement will be the same.

Instructions

1. Introduction of Brownies and their uniforms in other regions

 

Introduce the history and uniform characteristics of Brownies in 1-2 countries, such as the color of uniform, age division, the Promise and Law, forms of activity etc.

2. Identity Game

 

Each team is assigned as the Brownies of a specific country. Members need to identify the characteristics of Brownies in their own country and collect the related information cards from a pool. The team that finds the most correct answer will be the winner.

Which elements of the method are used, and how?

☑ Learning in small groups – Members work to together to memorize the information of their own countries. Therefore, all members must participate in the game and contribute their knowledge in order to get a complete answer.

 

☑ My path, my pace – Everyone has different strengths. Some are good at memorizing words; some are good at memorizing images. They learn to cooperate with each other to fully utilize their abilities.

 

☑ Learning by doing – The activity encourages the exchange of opinions between members and can consolidate their learning outcomes. When there is argument, members learn to keep calm and settle in a peaceful way.

 

☑Connecting with my world – Girl Guides and Girl Scouts is a worldwide organization with members from all over the world. Members take this opportunity to know more about other cultures and in what way they are different from Hong Kong. This helps them understand a broader world when they participate in international event in future.   

How does the method give youth members a chance to take the lead?

Each team can select the country they are interested in and improve their enthusiasm in the activity. All members have a high degree of participation in the game. The team can find a leader to co-ordinate the role of everyone and ensure that everyone can express her talents and opinions.

How can you connect this activity to the values of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting?

Leaders assist in members’ discussion on the similarities and differences of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other regions. They learn to respect and appreciate their cultures as Girl Guides in the world are sharing the same core value.
